In Room 105, we see reading as an invaluable treasure, to be enjoyed, shared, explored, appreciated, celebrated, and cultivated.
All this is done through daily read-alouds, independent reading, shared reading, book clubs, and partnerships.
Students should read at home every night, and it is our mission to match them with texts at appropriate levels of interest and challenge to help them not only grow as readers, but to enjoy the process and help them develop a lifelong love of reading.
Our Reading Curriculum is based on the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards. We use a reading workshop model supported by the Teachers' College Reading and Writing Project, which includes seven distinct units, as shown below.
Unit 1: Reading Growth Spurt
Unit 2: Growing Word Solving
Unit 3: Becoming Experts: Reading Non-Fiction
Unit 4: Accelerating Readers' Growth in Longer Fiction Books
Unit 5: Bigger books Mean Amping Up Reading Power
Unit 6: Reading Non-Fiction Cover to Cover: Non-Fiction Book Clubs
Unit 7: Series Book Clubs
